Everyone has their favorite foods and late night snacks. But did you know that what we eat directly affects how we sleep at night? Eating the wrong thing could be a sleep mistake you will pay for later. It is well known that you should not eat two hours before bed. This is so your body can properly digest your food. However, you can eat foods that will actually help you sleep and even make you sleep better. Bananas, cherries, almonds, tea, dairy products, toast and some other food are a great natural way to fall asleep.

Bananas are one of the best foods to help you get straight to bed at night. They are loaded with magnesium and potassium which will help your muscles wind down at the end of the day. They also have tryptophan, which converts to serotonin and melatonin. These help calm down the brain after a long day.
Almonds are a food that has a lot of health benefits. They contain magnesium which promotes both sleep and muscle relaxation. Almonds are packed with proteins that help maintain a stable blood sugar level while sleeping, and they help get you to sleep by switching you from your alert adrenaline cycle to your rest-and-digest cycle. This helps you get a deep satisfying sleep that will allow you to wake up and feel rested.
Cherries are a great snack before bed. These little snacks will actually help you fall asleep faster. Cherries naturally boost the body’s supply of melatonin, which helps people with insomnia and other sleeping disorders. Melatonin regulates the body’s internal sleep clock allowing a person who has a few before bed the ability to fall asleep faster. Tea can help relax the body as well. While you want to avoid all caffeine after dinner you can use decaffeinated tea to help you get right to sleep at night.
Chamomile tea and green tea are very helpful and safe sleep aids for those nights when you need a little help falling asleep and have you feeling great in the morning.
Dairy products such as milk, cheese, and yogurt are all great sources like bananas of tryptophan, which turns to 5-HTP and releases relaxing serotonin. It’s also high in calcium and other minerals, known to have a relaxing effect. When you add other food that helps you sleep with dairy products they have an even better effect on your sleep.
Toast and other carbohydrate-rich foods cause blood sugar levels to spike and then, trigger the body’s production of insulin eventually bringing them back down. Along with insulin comes a release of tryptophan and serotonin, two brain chemicals that promote relaxation and combat anxiety. There are a lot of good foods to eat before bed. Other food you should consider would have to be cereals, edamame, hard boiled eggs, oatmeal, turkey, hummus, tofu, and mashed potatoes.
