Have you heard Dr Sarah Myhill’s statistic that 1 hour of sleep before midnight is worth 2 after? That’s a pretty startling statistic. But does it have any merit? Just going a search in google led me to a lot of bad reviews about it. In some cases, it actually aggravated their sleep-related conditions. However, it’s not all that bad of an idea. I think she was on to something, but just barely missed the mark.
I decided to test it out for myself! When I was in high school I had to be there at 7 AM, so I woke up at 6AM every day and was asleep right at 10PM. This point in my life was the time I felt the most well-rested. Then for 1 month I slept from 12:30 to 8:30AM, depending on whether I had to be anywhere that morning. I was a little inconsistent, but I did feel more tired. I also noticed that I wasted more time! Now I sleep from 11:30PM to 7:30 AM, and it works well for me. I don’t use an alarm clock. I just wake up whenever, but it’s usually around the same time everyday (7:30AM). I’ve found that sleep is less about when you go to bed and more about the amount of sleep.
If you notice, in high school I went to bed at the same time every night and woke up at the same time each day. This consistent sleep pattern is what led my body to being well-rested throughout the day. I also think that getting the same amount of quality sleep each night was crucial. When people stay up late they usually have to get up early the next day, so they aren’t getting enough sleep. In my opinion, it’s less about what time you fall asleep and more about the quality!
